McDonough GA considers itself a town for all seasons. Visitors flock to this city which is located near the Atlanta Motor Speedway. There are many attractions and events including the Christmas Extravaganza, the Haunted History Tours, and the Geranium Festival. The city is also home to the Miss Georgia USA pageant and many different sports tournaments.
Visitors and residents can enjoy unique dining and shopping and learn about the city’s intriguing history. Southern Belle Farm offers strawberry picking and the city’s Wall of Honor commemorates the city’s veterans.
The city is easily accessible to Atlanta and sits right along I-75. The historic town square is trimmed with geraniums in the summer and serves as the heart of the downtown area. Entertainment events and festivals are held here throughout the year.
Visitors can take in a Broadway play by the Henry Players, explore galleries featuring local Henry County artists or enjoy dinner at the local 50’s diner.
When the warm weather hits, so do the festivals. The annual Geranium Festival is held in downtown and draws artisans from all over the South. The city is located in Henry County and is about 30 minutes from Atlanta. It has a population of around 23,000 and is the county seat. The town was founded in 1823 and was named after Commodore Thomas Macdonough, a naval officer. It was built around the town square which includes the historic jail and the country courthouse. Today, the town’s Welcome Center is in an old Standard Oil station which has been historically restored.
The Henry County Judicial Center is located a block off the town square in an old cotton warehouse. The Henry County Annex is in the same area. This Annex contains a Jean Charlot original oil on canvas. This work was painted in 1942 and was destined for the town post office. Charlot’s works are internationally famous and may be found throughout the world.
The city’s primary industry is Snapper Inc. This is a professional and residential snow removal and lawn care equipment, manufacturer. Founded in 1894, the company was sold to Briggs and Stratton. The plant closed in 2015 and has not been replaced with a new business. The proximity to Atlanta has allowed McDonough GA to remain a vibrant city.
